The mission of Modern by Design is to promote adoption by providing
financing to parents who have the desire to adopt but are unable
find a way to fund an adoption. We will do this by funneling
as much of our profits as possible into a fund that will eventually
turn into a foundation that offers low cost loans and grants
to adoptive families. In the interim we will donate 20% of all profit to One More Starfish, Inc. An organization helping orphans in Rwanda, Africa.

Our family started thinking about adoption in 1999 just after
our second son was born. A friend had adopted domestically and
we began to wonder if adoption might be in our future. About
four years later in 2003 our third son was 1 year old and we
felt it was time to persue an adoption. Over the years we had
decided that we want to adopt internationally from India. We
searched the internet for babies available and found that there
were none. This was a scary prospect. It meant changing countries
or adopting an older child with possible special needs.
We prayed and fasted and came to the conclusion that this was
the plan the Lord had for our family. After we had made our
decision we knew exactly which child to adopt. She was a 22
month old little girl with bilateral nystagmus(wiggling eyes).
We got our homestudy done and put her on hold for our family
and then we needed to come up with $10,000 for the agency fees.
We had no idea how we were to do this but we had faith that
the Lord would help us find a way. We did many fundraisers but
we only raised about $1,000. As for the rest, we were blessed
to have the means to take out a home equity line of credit.
It took us 14 months to get her home and we were able to pick
her up on her third birthday. You can read about it in detail
on our adoption blog. It has been a wild and beautiful ride
and an experience we wish that everyone could have.
Recently we heard of a family who were unable to adopt twin
girls from Haiti because out of necessity they had been moved
to a new orphanage and the fees needed to be repayed. This family
had already exhausted their financial resources paying the fees
the first time and now they were being asked for another $13,000.
There was no way they could get the money so they had to make
the painful decision not to adopt the girls. This was such a
heartbreaking and tragic story we thought "somebody should
do something!" So we decided to take action and Modern
by Design was created for this purpose.
We have a vision that someday many children will have homes
that possibly wouldn't have because we provided the financial
means for their families to adopt them. Please share in our
vision. Recommend our site to your friends. Help us make this
dream come true!
